New Year's Luncheon and Cutting of Vasilopita - 12/06/15

On Friday, January 1, we will usher in the civil New Year with Divine Liturgy and prayer service for the new year, and on Sunday, January 3, we will celebrate the traditional cutting of the Vasilopita, or St. Basil's Bread, right after Divine Liturgy during Coffee Hour.

Church School "JOY" Moving-up Ceremony - 05/10/15

The parish Church School program celebrates the completion of another year of educational activities on Sunday, June 21 with the annual Moving-up Ceremony.  Ceremonies will be conducted right after the completion of the Divine Liturgy in the Temple itself; JOY will be having a cake and also hosting Coffee Hour on this day, and a special surprise will be announced to the children at the end of the program.

All altar servers and boys of altar serving age will be enjoying a "altar boys day out" beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church. The boys will be enjoying an afternoon seeing a movie and practicing bell ringing.

JOY kids are already looking forward to this coming end-of-month annual celebration of the fall harvest, and the food, fun and fellowship that go along with it. Children can bring a costume to church but ONLY put it on after Divine Liturgy is over!

Mastic-Shirley Christmas Parade

Parade start time: 12:00 Noon beginning at the Koh's Shopping Center. St. John's will be marching in the parade in a religious procession with Cross, Fans, Banners, and Icons. JOY children will be dressed in their Nativity Play costumes.

Mother's Day Luncheon

All mothers, grandmothers, and godmothers will be served a delicious champagne mimosa brunch by the men of our parish in the parish hall.  The parish hall will be specially decorated for the occasion and there will be music and a few surprises to celebrate the blessing we all enjoy from our beloved mothers!

All new - and existing - members of St. John's are invited to attend this new orientation class especially developed to give new members a better understanding of the parish's life and ministry, values, vision, and mission to our surrounding neighborhood and community.  Presentation will be via a PowerPoint presentation and materials to be handed out will include the new Parish Member's Handbook.

Parish Ski/Board/Tubing Trip

Date: Saturday, February 6

A day of snow skiiing, boarding and tubing is planned for interested parishioners and their friends and family. Destination: Plattekill Mountain in the Catskills. Significantly reduced prices for all ticket prices; money will be due to Bill Honan prior so that we can purchase the tickets and have them ready for pick-up at the mountain.

Sisterhood Flower Show Trip

On Saturday, March 10 and again on Saturday, March 31, the ladies of the parish women's fellowship, the Sisterhood of St. Xenia, will be spending some time together enjoying each other's company attending both the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Macy's Flower Show in March. The latter will be capped off by a return trip to Carmine's for dinner afterwards. Travel will be by bus (to the former) and LIRR (to the latter). Contact the parish for more information.

SOUPer Bowl of Caring

Sunday, February 7 (through February)
Leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, (in 2016: Sunday, February 7), Orthodox parishes all across the country will be collecting canned goods and hygiene kits for distribution through IOCC.  Please bring in canned goods and/or items for hygiene kits by Super Bowl Sunday.

Summer Clean-up & Fix-up

Date: July 10, 2010
In preparation for wedding, baptisms and the visit of His Grace, Bishop Michael for the JOY Summer Sleep-over, all parishioners, including teens and children, are asked to set aside time on Saturday, July 10 to work on a long list of improvement projects.  These will include cleaning and repairing in the hall and temple and landscaping and clean-up outside.

Teens Lenten Retreat

The Diocese of New York and New Jersey will sponsor an Overnight Youth Retreat at the Taconic Retreat Center in Milan, NY for students 7th-12th Grades on April 1-3, 2016.  The Lenten Youth Retreat is entitled “Faith and Science Need Not Oppose Each Other: The Testimonies of Two Orthodox Professionals in the Field of Medicine".  Orthodox and non-Orthodox students are encouraged to attend. This is a great opportunity for Orthodox young people to invite a non-Orthodox friend.

Theophany Services and the "Dive for the Cross"

St. John's will be commemorating the baptism of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ with the traditional series of services and blessings for the Great Feast of the Theophany from Thursday, January 5 through Sunday, January 8. Home blessings will begin on Friday, January 6 after the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy.
